Tongue tie (medically known as ankyloglossia) is a condition that restricts the tongue’s range of motion. It is present at birth and can interfere with breastfeeding, causing babies to struggle with healthy weight gain. A band of tissue called the lingual frenulum tethers the bottom of the tongue to the floor of the mouth. Problems with movement, dental development, speech development and even sleeping can result. Some cases of tongue tie don’t pose any problems. Cases that do require correction by releasing the tight band of tissue so the tongue enjoys freedom of movement,

Lip tie is a similar condition to tongue tie, except a tether of skin bonds the upper lip tightly to the gum. It causes similar problems with feeding and movement as a tongue tie, and the two can co-occur. Approximately 5% of all newborns have one or both conditions. If your infant has trouble breastfeeding, you should have he or she evaluated for tongue or lip tie. Your pediatrician can usually diagnose these conditions, but treatment requires the skills of a talented pediatric surgeon.
